Islamabad on Saturday denounced the \u201cprovocative\u201d remarks made by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in a televised interview yesterday, in which he appeared to confirm that New Delhi was carrying out an\u00a0assassination campaign<\/a>\u00a0in Pakistan, as reported by\u00a0The Guardian<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf any terrorist from a neighbouring country tries to disturb India or carry out terrorist activities here, he will be given a fitting reply. If he escapes to Pakistan we will go to Pakistan and kill him there,\u201d Singh said in an interview to Indian TV news network\u00a0News18<\/em>\u00a0on Friday.<\/p>\n

Singh\u2019s remarks followed\u00a0The Guardian\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0investigative report, published on Thursday, which said at least 20 individuals had been murdered in Pakistan since 2020 at the behest of Indian intelligence operatives. The report said it had seen evidence provided by Pakistani security agencies, and noted that Indian officers confirmed the new policy of assassinating enemies and dissidents on foreign soil. India\u2019s Ministry of External Affairs had denied the allegations.<\/p>\n

Singh said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made it clear this policy was \u201cright\u201d and that \u201cIndia has the capability to do so. Pakistan has also started understanding this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Singh\u2019s comments are the first time that India has acknowledged any assassinations by its operatives on foreign soil,\u00a0The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0in a follow-up story published on Friday.<\/p>\n

In October 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had cited what he said was\u00a0credible evidence<\/a>\u00a0of a potential link between Indian agents and the murder of a Sikh separatist leader. The following month, the US Department of Justice had said an Indian government official\u00a0directed an unsuccessful plot<\/a>\u00a0to assassinate a Sikh separatist on US soil.<\/p>\n

On January 25, Foreign Secretary Syrus Sajjad Qazi had said in a press conference that there was\u00a0\u201ccredible evidence\u201d<\/a>\u00a0of links between Indian agents and the assassination of two Pakistani nationals in Sialkot and Rawalakot.<\/p>\n

In a Foreign Office (FO) statement issued today, Pakistan officially condemned what it described as \u201cprovocative remarks\u201d made by the Indian defence minister.<\/p>\n

The FO explained that in the foreign secretary\u2019s presser on Jan 25, Pakistan had provided\u00a0\u201cirrefutable evidence\u201d<\/a>\u00a0of India\u2019s involvement in extrajudicial killings and transnational assassinations on Pakistani soil.<\/p>\n
